Chapter 1

Content Warnings

Black screen with white text, the text reading the poem Fire and Ice by Robert Frost, modified by Cider. "Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire, but if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction, ice is also great." The original poem pauses here, and moves on to a modified final verse. "Though lightning is one that must suffice, as far as I can tell as to neutrality, I cannot help but wonder while ice and fire reign their fatality, of the indifference of thunder. From the moment we are born, there is no shelter from the storm."
Lightning is seen striking over a coniferous forest at night. We then see a horsecart being pulled up the road, with Checkbook and Wiffle Ball sitting in the front seat. Checkbook is smiling, while Wiffle Ball is unamused. "Tell me again why we couldn't have just come here in my car?" Wiffle Ball asks. "My mom doesn't like cars," Checkbook replies. Wiffle Ball scowls. "Who cares?" she asks, "if we had my car, we'd be there by now."
Coffee Pot is seen perched on the side of the cart, listening to the conversation. "Oh, absolutely not," Checkbook says, "cars are much too loud. Plus, this road isn't fit for cars anyway." "A little mud? My car can handle it," Wiffle Ball replies. "I don't care. No means no." Checkbook says back. "Checkbook, this is a scientific expedition!" Wiffle Ball snaps, "and we're coming here on a rickety horsecart?! If you actually cared about science, we'd have been there days ago." Wiffle Ball harumphs. Lightning lights up the area once again, and a spider figure can be seen between the trees. Checkbook and Coffee Pot freeze up in terror, having seen the monster, while Wiffle Ball stares straight ahead, not having seen it. "Checkbook...?" Coffee Pot says. "I know," Checkbook says, tugging on the reins to get the horse to stop, "I saw it."
Checkbook hops off of the cart's front seat and onto the horse's back. "You two keep quiet and don't move," she says. "Checkbook! You idiot, what are you doing?! You're gonna get your pages wet!" Wiffle Ball shouts, watching Checkbook expose herself to the rain. Checkbook begins to blindfold the horse, while rumbling and creaking noises are heard. Coffee Pot smacks her hand over Wiffle Ball's mouth, shushing her. "It's coming closer!" Coffee Pot says. Checkbook holds still, glaring at the approaching creature. The creature steps near the wheel of the cart, its leg being a skeletan arm held together with bits of flesh and purple material. Coffee Pot and Wiffle Ball stare up at the creature in terror as it looms over the cart. Coffee Pot squeezes her eyes shut, while Wiffle Ball stares at the green thing, its face full of holes, teeth, and purple. The creature rattles as it moves.
As she shakes in fear, Coffee Pot's fur stands up as she continues to hold a paw over Wiffle Ball's mouth, while the rattling and creaking noises become quiet. Coffee Pot's fur settles slightly as she opens one eye. A limb of the creature is seen being dragged into the bushes as it leaves. Checkbook removes the blindfold from the horse, turning to face Coffee Pot and Wiffle Ball. Checkbook shakes her head, while signing "no cars".
Coffee Pot signs "yes", and Wiffle Ball nods. The cart continues on down the path. Later, Wiffle Ball is asleep, leaning against Checkbook. Coffee Pot hangs upside down. "Hey, Checkbook? What was that thing?" Coffee Pot asks. "Well... my mom calls them the children of the night," Checkbook replies, "they're actually harmless if you don't provoke them."
"They're practically totally blind, and can only see movement. They've been here for God of Air knows how long. They're hundreds of suns old. There's fifteen of them here," Checkbook says. "Where did they come from? What arer they?" Coffee Pot asks. "Well..." Checkbook says, "Do you know what a recovery center is, Coffee Pot?" Checkbook yanks on the reins, stopping the horse. This startles Wiffle Ball awake, and Coffee Pot is left looking alarmed. "Wah? Why did we stop?! Is there another creature?" Wiffle Ball asks in a panic. "I'm not sure," Checkbook replies, "there's something in the road..." A dark shape is seen on the path, in the shadows. A single blue eye on the creature lights up in the darkness. Then, lightning strikes, briefly illuminating the creature. A scarred up, giant wooden monster object glares at the trio. Everyone, including the horse, stare at the beast in fear, before Checkbook lights up with a big simle. She throws her arms in the air. "Mom!" Checkbook exclaims.
